Thailand Railway Hall of Fame, also known as Rail
Museum Bangkok, is a private museum. The museum displays Steam engines,
train models and miniature trains are exhibited along with the story of
world railway systems. Trains are the main theme in the museum though
there are also model cars and military vehicles.
Museum Exhibits
The museum displays one of the last steam engines produced in the
world. The story about it is quite interesting. It was shipped to a
sugar plantation in Hat Yai, but by the time it reached the plantation
suffered huge losses. The locomotive, with its unusual 75 cm gauge,
could not be used on local railways. It lied unused for 50 years till it
was brought to the museum.
A Vickers Carden-Loyd 2-man tank is an interesting tank in the museum.
The tank was the part of 1920s Thai army. The museum has two railroad
cars from King Rama V era. One of these has been restored. The wreckage
of a Japanese general's plane is also something interesting. Also see
the electric tram. The placing and choice of artifacts has been made at
random. Don't expect English labeling in all artifacts here. Entry in
the museum is free and this seems to have taken its toll on the
maintenance.
Location
The railway museum is located on the northwestern corner of Chatuchak
Park along Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road.
How to Reach
Travel north on Phahonyothin Road. Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road runs along the
northern edge of Chatuchak Market. However, on weekends, you have to
continue down Phahonyothin Road and turn left on Wiphawadi-rangsit Road.
Take the first left to reach the museum.
Opening Time
The museum is open only on Saturdays and Sundays from 5.00 a.m. - 12.00
p.m. Entry in the Train Museum Bangkok is free.
